RED HAND DAY

Earlier in the year Turramurra North Public School received an email from a past pupil who is now a teacher of English and Humanities at the John F Kennedy International School in Switzerland.  She invited TNPS to participate in a project her school has been running for a few years.

Red Hand Day (International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, 12th February) is an annual commemoration drawing attention to the plight of children forced to serve as soldiers in wars and armed conflicts.  The day was initiated in 2002 when the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict came into force on the 12th February.  Since then, the number of child soldiers has hardly changed and it is estimated that 250,000 children are currently being used in wars as soldiers.

The red handprint has been adopted as an international symbol against the use of child soldiers.  During art classes Turramurra North Public School students printed their own Red Hands with personal messages attached to each one.  These handprints, over 300 of them, along with a video created by Sally and Isabelle will be forwarded to Switzerland where they will become part of a presentation by the International School to the United Nations in Geneva in early 2016.  Click below to view the video.

YEAR 5 and 6 Grayscale

Stage 2 students have studied grayscale in depth this year.  We have done many exercises using grayscale including squinting at an image, doing thumbnail sketches and constructing their own grayscale.  They have also been introduced to paper stumps and kneadable rubbers as well as a selection of B pencils from 2B through to 6B.  These are some of the fabulous drawings they have produced using the knowledge and resources they have.  I will post more as they are finished but, I think you would have to agree this is a very impressive start!

This student drew a gum leaf
found outside the art room.  She then
took a photo of it on her iPad and
changed it into a black and white image and then redrew it.  Wow!

YEAR 1 Leon Pericles

 'Very Fishy!'

Leon Pericles is a Perth based artist, who because of his proximity to the west coast, often makes artworks about the ocean and it's creatures.

Students love his sense of humour, with such titles as 'Storm in a Tea cup' and 'Raining Cats and Dogs'.

Year 1 used oil pastel and dyes to create their versions of 'Sunday' with the fish enjoying the beach from its bowl!

STAGE 2 "IN OUTER SPACE"

IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE?

Earlier in 2015, Years 3 and 4 studied the life and Art of NASA scientist and artist Edward Belbruno.

Students used permanent markers and experimented with dyes while creating these very imaginative and colourful characters.

YEAR 2 SURREALIST INTERPRETATIONS

Year 2 were studying Surrealism and in particular Salvador Dali.  They learnt that surrealism combined your dreams with reality.  Using their imagination and an "anything is possible" approach the students designed and created their dreamlike creatures at either Uluru or the Sydney Opera House.  They used black pen, watercolours, tempura wash and oil pastels to create these dreamlike images.  I think they invite us to imagine…..

YEAR 1 REMEMBRANCE DAY

As part of our Remembrance Day Service today students in year 1 made poppies and planted them in the school grounds to remember the sacrifice made by all those brave men and women who fought and died in wars to keep Australia free and safe. Lest We Forget.
