RED HAND DAY

Earlier in the year Turramurra North Public School received an email from a past pupil who is now a teacher of English and Humanities at the John F Kennedy International School in Switzerland.  She invited TNPS to participate in a project her school has been running for a few years.

Red Hand Day (International Day Against the Use of Child Soldiers, 12th February) is an annual commemoration drawing attention to the plight of children forced to serve as soldiers in wars and armed conflicts.  The day was initiated in 2002 when the United Nations Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict came into force on the 12th February.  Since then, the number of child soldiers has hardly changed and it is estimated that 250,000 children are currently being used in wars as soldiers.

The red handprint has been adopted as an international symbol against the use of child soldiers.  During art classes Turramurra North Public School students printed their own Red Hands with personal messages attached to each one.  These handprints, over 300 of them, along with a video created by Sally and Isabelle will be forwarded to Switzerland where they will become part of a presentation by the International School to the United Nations in Geneva in early 2016.  Click below to view the video.
