YEAR 1 FLOWERS AND INSECTS

Jan van Huysum was a Dutch still life specialist, one of the most distinguished of his day.  Unlike most other artists of his time, he insisted on painting from close studies of the world around him.  Year 1 drew inspiration from his lush paintings of flowers and foliage to create their own van Huysum inspired flowers using oil pastels and wash.  Their insects were drawn with black marker and painted with gouache.  They were very excited to be introduced for the first time to these vibrant paints.  Their insects were placed on and around their flowers just as real insects would be.  I think this is the largest group of the happiest insects I have ever seen and so they should be, look at the variety of stunning flowers they can land on!
