YEAR 2 INSECTS

Year 2 studied the extraordinary artwork of German biologist and artist Ernst Haeckel.  We looked at his images and the way they were displayed, noting the symmetry, repeating patterns, line, form and colour of the insects as well as their anatomy.  Year 2 drew on their artistic talents to create colourful backgrounds and then blew ink from a straw to create one side of their imaginary insect.  The paper was folded to produce a symmetrical insect that was embellished with posca and transparent wings.  Reading their reflections on the process and final product brought a smile to my face, they are so proud of what they have created and our display in the administration office has received much positive feedback.

Imagine one of these beautiful insects visiting your garden!

Students reflected on the process and added a little self-evaluation.  They included observational drawing of insects in their Visual Art Diaries.
